It's no coincidence that the show's official title (Thunder in the Midlands, at Shaw Air Force Base) makes no mention of planes or flying. Calling it an air show would be selling the event short. Yes, USAF Thunderbirds is an undeniable headliner and 90% of the show is about flying. The sole purpose of my presence is to gather the best collection of images for the flight demo, and there may still be some displayed if pre-flight time permits. While the show fulfills that wish, the remaining 10 percent turns a mere air show into something more. It truly celebrates all branches of our Armed Forces and all those who have served this great country.

Supporting this transition is the usual air show fare: various displays and tributes to MIA soldiers, various armor (M1A1 Abrams, M2 Bradley, 155mm Paladin) and various other vehicles. Nothing but a typical air show experience.

The culmination of the performance and the catalyst for transformation was the final demonstration: the Joint Demonstration. The demonstration included eight jets, three helicopters and three Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTACs) conducting simulated operations against high-value targets. Although the role of the jet is filled by the U.S. Air Force. and Australian National Guard, Navy and Marine Corps pilots also fly these missions. The JTAC role is a multi-branch role. Of course, the Army provides helicopters, making this a full-spectrum display: all four branches; land, air and/or sea.

Note how the nose gear is off center on the A-10 to make room for the GAU-8 Avenger. I like that the plane took an unusual solution to accommodate the weapon system. [box_light][/box_light]

The demonstration began with the launch of four F-16 Wild Weasels and two A-10s from Shaw Air Force Base. They left the immediate area to meet two vipers from Ft. McEntire United Nations Civilian Guard Base. The announcer sets the scene, explains the JTAC's role in identifying targets and directs support aircraft to drop ordnance.

Suddenly, our fake AWACS support called in an unidentified enemy aircraft and directed wild foxes to our area. Two F-16s converged over the exhibition center. Missile fire was called in, and a brief dogfight ensued before the airspace was determined to be clear. At that time, JTAC was directing bombing and strafing from HVTs in the area. Both the A-10 and F-16 actually use flares when climbing from the attack runway. Once the target was destroyed, and again several times, two AH-64 Apaches came in to clean up and run to safety. A UH-60 Black Hawk landed and infiltrated the JTAC group. The Wild Foxes make sure to meet the "first in, last out" and light up the area several times as they exit.

There's nothing special about any single element of the demo: I've seen demos of all these planes fly alone many times before. Flares are new to me, and a very pleasant surprise. But the copious use of flaming magnesium flakes can't hold together a performance of this magnitude. The only explanation is that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. I came for a day of flying demonstrations and left with a reminder that today's conflict requires air support. Yes, critical, JDAM-to-face size support, but more effort is still needed.

The demonstration of joint strength is a microcosm of the entire show. The Air Force is obviously our host and the focus today. Yet the Navy, Army and Veterans organizations I have spoken to throughout the day do not play a supporting role in Air Force events. Maybe it's no different than every other air show I've been to, but somehow the combination of the demo sets things straight: air superiority alone is not enough to win today's conflicts, and this mission is a real battle between all services cooperating.

I would like to thank MSgt Latisha Cole and SSgt Molly Edler for their help with the show and Shaw AFB for a great event. I hope the Viper East team doesn't have to wait another four years for their next home show!

The show has a strong service theme. Due to WX on Saturday and a 300 foot ceiling on Sunday, the Disabled American Veterans were unable to bring their B-25 Panchito to ShawFest. The team was disappointed not to be able to implement it, but the ground team was still in place to highlight the good work the organization had done.

This P-8 Poseidon flew from Jacksonville, Florida. LT Lindsey Asdal previously flew the P-3 Orion. Since the P-3 fleet has been updated with all-glass cockpits, functionally, there is little difference between flying the two anti-submarine warfare aircraft, he said. However, the similarities end there. The P-3's mechanical connection to the flight controls makes for a tactile experience that's hard to miss, although the P-8's situational awareness is far better. So difficult, he likened the comparison to choosing between children.

Joe Masessa brought his Northrup OV-1 to the show. While the Mohawk has the traditional low-contrast gray uniform, it also lists the names of every MIA soldier in the Vietnam conflict. Admittedly, the OV-1 isn't the most exciting aircraft in the series, but due to its uniqueness and rarity, it's one of the ones I'm looking forward to the most. Here again, the exceptional cockpit design provides unparalleled visibility, facilitating its role as a reconnaissance platform.

Another beautiful and unusual solution, this time at F4U. Curved wings allow large blades on the Corsair and minimize height, reducing the weight of the main landing gear. An elegant solution to critical and conflicting design criteria for unassisted carrier launch.

The MIG-17 put on a great show. Not only is it a great visual afterburner, but Fighterjets Inc. really threw it out there.

The RCAF fielded their CF-18 demo team to showcase their special livery celebrating the Commonwealth Air Training Programme. This Canadian job trained pilots, radio operators, gunners and navigators for World War II. The effort resulted in over 130,000 Commonwealth personnel serving in Australia, Canada, Great Britain and New Zealand, as well as crews from Belgium, Czechoslovakia, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland and the United States.
