South Carolina Vehicle Registration - South Carolina residents who recently paid their vehicle taxes may experience a delay in receiving a new registration card and license plate decal.
S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles vendors recently lost the type of paper used to register vehicles, "due to a supply chain issue," DMV Executive Director Kevin Schwedo said in a Sept. 9 news release.

"We are always in contact with our contract vendors, but with very few companies offering this product, we were forced to reduce the production of registration cards until we deliver the next shipment," said Schwedo.

"We expect the backlog to be resolved by mid-October, but we recommend that you keep your paid property tax receipt in your vehicle until your decal and registration arrive," Schwedo said. Once items are returned, records are automatically emailed so there is no need to request a copy."
Spartanburg County Treasurer Owen Brady only recently learned of the paper shortage and said his office has already received calls from residents who paid their car taxes a month ago but haven't. received their registration or decal.
"The public needs to know," Brady said. "Anyone who paid their taxes at the end of August or September 1 may not have the decal yet."
"Even if the registration has not yet been printed, law enforcement officers will be able to see if a customer's registration is current or not by querying the SCDMV records database," a DMV news release said.
North Carolina (nc) Registration Renewal Options & Overview
Brady said many residents pay their car taxes in person at his office in the county administration building on North Church Street, then get the registration and decal in the one place.
But the county is almost out of stock of the paper used to print the cards and decals, he said.
He said his office orders 12,000 forms from the DMV each month and didn't receive any last week.
"I only have 4,000 now,” Brady said. “Next week when people pay their bills it's the end of the month and there's a line down the hall."
